Documentary Socratic Seminar

 

Objective: Synthesis of information about a topic raised in a documentary of your choosing

 

Process:

  • In a group of four, choose a documentary to watch and analyze for argument
  • Produce a synopsis of the documentary to distribute to the class as you conduct your seminar
  • Choose a topic raised in the documentary and each person reads a different article linked to the topic. Bring these articles read and annotated to your Socratic Seminar
  • Prepare (individually) 5 upper level bloom’s questions to ask within the conversation
  • Conduct a Socratic Seminar in which your group discusses the documentary and information in the articles – this is 100 percent group driven, the instructor and other students are merely observers of the conversation.
  • Your discussion will be 15-20 minutes

 

Evaluation:

Recognize techniques in visual as well as verbal arguments
In addition to score 3.0 performance, the student demonstrates in-depth inferences and applications that go beyond what was taught.
3.5 in addition to score 3.0 performance, partial success at score 4.0 content
3 Students will recognize and evaluate techniques utilized in both visual and verbal arguments thoroughly
2.5 No major errors or omissions regarding score 2.0 content and partial success at score 3.0 content
2 Students will recognize and identify techniques used in visual and verbal arguments
1.5 Partial success at score 2.0 content and major errors or omissions regarding score 3.0 content
