AP – Musical Montage – Personal Philosophy Final

Our self is a gathering of experiences and influences. Some experiences are housed for later because, at the time, they are too overwhelming or too huge to fully comprehend at the moment. Other times, these experiences are housed to process when they are more relevant, or when we have use of the information. Often Art is the strongest representation of who we are, what we stand for, and how we are in a particular moment in time.

We are in a time of transition. We all have stories to tell. We all have lessons to teach. What are your lessons? What have you learned? What do you stand upon fully as a part of your rhetoric.

Your task – Create a musical montage in which you pair music and art in order to represent three of your core beliefs. You can create your own art, music, or pair those that are already in existence.

Requirements – 

  • One belief should link to your columnist. What did you learn from studying their work? How does it synthesize with one of your beliefs?
  • 5-7 minutes max (we will start presenting on Thursday – last half of hour, Friday and the Final day).

AP – Norming Synthesis essays

Today in your writing groups, you will read each other’s essays and use the norming packet to both identify what we are doing well and what we need to work on, and then grade each other’s essays based on the rubric.


AP – Synthesis essay and ted

AP gives you a 15 minute reading period for the synthesis essay in which you are to read and annotate both prompt and sources to formulate an original argument, not one regurgitated from the sources. The sources back you up, not the other way around.

AP – documentary Socratic seminar

We are starting our unit on documentaries this week. Below are three articles I’d like you to have read by Wednesday. You can either read and take notes in your journal, print, or cut and paste the text and citation into a word document, take notes with the review comments tab and then print. You will need to have text and annotation for each article on Thursday.

Find another source – whether video, text, art, etc. about happiness and bring in your notes on it.

Happy day two notes and assignment

Today we finished the Happy documentary.

Here are some notes –

  • Bhutan is focused on gross national happiness – they could flood their valley and make a profit from hydro-electricity, but that would mean moving people, so they will not do it.
  • Denmark – free education through college; free health care for life; cohabitation – brings all generations together, familial duties are shared, experiences are shared.
  • When we work in a community, the focus is on:
  • What do I have to share?
  • What is the religion/spiritual connection to universe, others, and self?
  • Icharibode (sp) spirit = “we meet, and are brother and sister.” “Do no harm.”
  • Monchu = “one family” communal coffin for ashes
  • Cooperation releases dopamine
  • We experience compassion from birth with reliance on another for nourishment
  • With focused intention, we can change our brains
  • Sweetness in taking up someone else’s burden
  • “Life is given on loan, and I give it back with interest.”
  • Gratitude, compassion, and cooperation are spiritual emotions and focus care about things bigger than self
  • spend time each day practicing happiness – it is a skill
  • The trick is to be authentically you

AP – Happy day one notes and questions

Below are just a few notes jotted from today’s viewing of Happy. Please answer the questions below and be ready for discussion tomorrow:


How does the director, Roko Belic, establish Ethos, Pathos, Logos?
What is the exigency?
How does imagery, music, typography, graphics, etc. add to the argument?
How do you define happiness?
Which story resonates with you the most? Why?

Flow is defined as a state in which challenges and skills are equally matched.

Happiness also is within those who can recover from adversity quickly

Karoshi – Japanese word that means to work to death

Once basic needs are met – money does not increase happiness

Hedonic treadmill – more stuff brings a want for more stuff

Goals are both external and internal:

External: money, image, status

Internal: personal growth, relationships, desire to help
